Screen Time For Children

It is obvious that if in this modern age you did not follow technological advancements, you will fall behind the people who regularly follow them. This is why people try to follow the digital world at any cost.

Most of the parents fear that their kids would be incompetent if they fail to understand the usage of technology from a very early age. Therefore, parents have handed over the advanced digital devices to their kids in the age when they should be given toys to play with. However, there is no proof of child development by using screens at an early age.

It is not just children that are at risk due to screen time; teens are also affected. Teens are more familiar with technological uses and are mainly affected by it.

The provision of screens to children is easy but control of using them is not easy as it may seem. Have you ever considered technology and its effects on your children?

Screen time for teens could vary. Teens might need more supervision than younger children as they know more about the digital world than the younger kids. They require different screen time from doing school assignments to playing video games.

Parental guidance of screen time for children is necessary. Consider it as the most important part of children’s upbringing. It also keeps parents in the loop of what their children are watching. To ensure quality screen time, consider the following:

· Make sure they watch educational content

· Research programs

· Preview apps before allowing them

· Establish guidelines

· Monitor their daily online activities

· Choose healthy activities

· Interact with children

· Avoid screens at least one hour before sleep time

· Keep all screens out of the child’s bedroom

· Avoid commercial and adult programs

It is difficult to be around your child all the time. In that case, make sure they know what content to watch and what not to. They will most probably not follow the rules set for them. To tackle this, restrict the device to “Children Mode” and/or install “Parental Spying Apps” before handing over the device.

Since almost everybody was in self-quarantine at their homes and the schools were closed due to COVID-19. In some parts of the world, lockdown is still implemented and people are in quarantine at their homes where they have just indoor activities to entertain themselves with. In these conditions, kids had to use more screen than in normal times. They were already overly committed to their screens in normal conditions but the COVID-19 has forced them to be in front of their screens even more.

Teens are more addicted to screens as compared to younger children. They pretend to know more about the digital world than their elders which makes it hard to control their excessive screen time. Their basic necessity of the digital world makes them sedentary which resultantly makes them more of a technophile than an athlete.

The above statistics are concerning as excessive screen time in kids is associated with the following issues:

· Obesity

· Behavioral problems

· Less social interactions

· Less exercise and outdoor playing

· Attention problems

· Cognitive development

· Insomnia

From the above discussion, we can conclude that there should neither be zero nor excessive screen time for children. It is important to keep the balance. Going through their daily schedule and take into consideration both their screen time and physical activities is a fine way to keep the balance. A good schedule will be accepted if the Teens’ opinion has been taken into account. It will make them feel they have been taken on board. A balanced schedule will help children connect with the digital world and the community simultaneously.
