My TIIDELab Experience 1.0

Emmanuel’s Portrait

An experience worth sharing…

The last month has been a pleasurable experience for myself and 59 other privileged fellows. TIIDELab and her sponsors have made it so. They have set us on a 5-month journey into software development. Being in the 3rd Cohort of the TIIDELab Fellowship has been both interestingly challenging and a learning journey I don’t foresee myself regret embarking on.

Reminiscing, the selection process received over a thousand applications which were followed by an online test. The next stage was a mini-project and video pitch which I can tell you was where my learning journey all started. About 80 prospective fellows made it through this stage while 60 (34 in Lagos and 26 in Abuja)were selected after an interview process. The fellowship is quite hybrid, meaning that it is both physical and virtual. Physical meet-up occurs every Friday in Lagos and Abuja simultaneously.

Several power-packed activities have marked the program which is geared towards fellows honing both technical skills and non-technical ones like communication, problem-solving, team-building, decision making and leadership skills. This has helped me among other things to collaborate with both physical and virtual teammates. I also, for the first time, created and hosted my portfolio website.

We have had keynote lectures from a number of resource persons. The founder of TIIDELab, Mr Kadir Salami told us four of a few things he wished he had known earlier in his career: show your work, fear is your friend (listen to it), find a mentor and know what, where, when, who, why and how to communicate. Mr Shamsudeen Aderoju, the Program Coordinator, Mr Tukura Pishiken, the Quality Assurance and Accountability Officer, Ms Celeste the Program Directorour, our coaches Mr Solomon Chokor and Mr Kenny Ibrahim have proven to be invaluable.

Thanks to TIIDELab and our sponsors, the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) under the Technical Skills Development Program 2021. We promised to trust the process and we will.

We have done so much in one month, I can only imagine what the remaining time at TIIDELab will look like. I promise to keep you posted.

Thank you for your time.
