Life happens to everyone — you’re ready to go to work. You’ve showered, had your morning smoothie and did your 15min of reading, you’ve kissed your son goodbye, you’ve got your coffee mug hot and full ready for today’s meetings and then get in your car and….

Battery is dead. No problem just get out your jumper cables and….. oh wait, you don’t have any jumper cables. A feeling of frustration starts deep down in your gut and permeates it’s way up to you chest then finally you take a big inhale and exhale some profanities. OK — it’s 6:30 am, I’m thinking realisticly this puts me back several hours but luckily my first meeting isn’t until noon.
But then a flash of insight, you drive to a family members house (in the car that works), grab some jumper cables and head back — you can do it you can still make the office for 8:30am…. but ultimatly the cables are too short, you try from the other side — still too short, we’re stuck again.
Now, instead of being frustrated, angry or even worried, my mind is calm. I’m actually feeling rather lucky that this happen, thoughts that come to me are:
Now, it’s easy to stay calm and relax when faced with a setback if there isn’t any immidiate consquences, but if I had an important meeting then this would have been a different story.
The moral is: things happen for a reason if you believe that to be true, the opposite is also true. We can’t control what happens to us in this life, the only thing that we have somewhat control over is how we respond. Today, my response started in frustration and ended in calmness.
