Why we should prioritize diversion of waste in Uganda

The journey of creating sustainable communities, businesses, and homes should start with different waste management players. It should be a collective effort, for example, waste creators (people & businesses) should establish a culture on how they handle their waste, waste collection companies should help their customers divert more waste, recycling companies should take up a lot of this waste and re-use it among others.

If we can do this, then we can possibly save our ecosystem and at the same time create cleaner communities.

We want to create a network of independent waste haulers that value diverting wastes from landfills and rather see opportunity in recycling and putting the trash to reuse.

The waste management industry in Uganda shouldn’t be about collecting and dumping waste in landfills, but rather finding more innovative ways to recycle and reuse this waste, create more employment for the unemployed in the waste industry.

The authority should be more welcoming and supportive to waste collection companies that take extra effort in finding value in the waste they collect. A lot of waste collection companies simply pick and dump waste in landfills, which is not sustainable!! Because if we do this for the next decade, chances are high that more expenses will be faced trying to set up more and more landfills (which is very expensive).

One of the biggest challenges in the Uganda community is different waste management players working differently to achieve the same goal of ending waste.

To some waste management players, it’s simply business whereas others the hindrance to achieve their goals are limited.

We hope in the next few years of our existence, we shall create a network of different waste management players that are motivated in creating a circular economy for all.
