How to choose a country to live in and why compare countries?

Something about 10 years ago we (as a young family) started to think about moving from Russia. There are a number of reasons: climate, political climate, safety, healthcare, etc.

And it is a hard choice, even if you are going to restrict the choice by Europe.

For a number of reasons the decision took more than 7 years, then we had to spend some time on the paperwork and so on.

Finally, in 2021 we moved to Portugal and I hope we will stay here — because everything is way below our expectations.

But this is our choice and I’m not going to try to convince you that Portugal is the best country for everybody.

For the whole 10 years, I spent hundreds of hours reading and comparing countries.

Then, after Russia began the war in Ukraine I got quite tired of answering questions and taking part in discussions about the country’s comparison (it is not mandatory for a normal person, but somehow I was involved in such discussions in some communities).

Apart from some similar projects, I focused on an overview for comparison.

Of course, you can compare the country to its neighbors or any other country in the World.

Here I tried to make the comparison clear and easy to read by adding visual signs and conclusions for particular ratings:

Position of Portugal is better than the position of Spain.

You can agree or disagree with these statements but for each of them, I provided the source of info. All the sources have more or less transparent descriptions of their research.

Hope the tool could help you to spend less time on your research or, at least, have some joy.
