Start Your Professional Portfolio

Professional portfolio … You’ve probably had to keep a portfolio at some point during your academic life. But have you heard of a professional portfolio?

A professional portfolio is simply a collection of documents, accolades, certifications and objects which best demonstrate your talents, relevant skills and provides evidence of professional growth.

A professional portfolio has been used for years by artists, architects and even engineers to highlight their work. But, this valuable resource can be used by anyone in any profession. It is a tool which can be used during a job interview. It gives the interviewee something to focus on instead of focusing on the interview process alone.

Creating a professional portfolio does not have to be difficult. My portfolio is in a couple of hanging files. I include my favorite works as well as anything that highlights what I do. For example, I have a copy of a newspaper article, a spotlight of a student who mentioned me as a contributor to his success as a student. I have curriculum which I have written. A syllabus. A sample of my writing. My philosophy of education and my transcripts.

Before I go to an interview or to meet a client, I carefully go through the items in my files and select the best representations of my work which correlates with the position. For instance, if I were looking to get a new client in a capacity of student success, I’d probably take the article from the newspaper and leave behind the curriculum. In contrast, if I were applying for a curriculum writing position, the curriculum and syllabus would be highly valuable.

Since this is not a portfolio with confines, be sure to include anything and everything that you are proud of. Don’t worry about what may be right or wrong, correct or incorrect. It is open. There is no right or wrong answer in this endeavor.
