How Many Hats Are You Wearing In Business?

It has to happen. As the owner of a small business, you will have to do a lot of things… marketing manager, bookkeeper, person who makes content, coach, technical support staff, and customer service staff.

But even though it’s normal to have a lot of hats to wear, you should know that not all of them are the same.

For example, marketing is more important than bookkeeping because without marketing, there would be no money to keep track of.

You also need to think about how much time you are spending in each area.

What do you gain if you spend all day making changes to the look of your website but don’t send an email to your list?

You might have a nicer website, but you missed a chance to get people interested in what you had to offer.

In a perfect world, you’d just put on your CEO hat and delegate the rest, but that’s not always possible in the real world.

You need to work smarter and be careful about how you use your time.

Here are some suggestions…

When it comes to the tasks we want and need to do, we all have different skills and sweet spots.

You might like helping customers but hate doing the books, while someone else might like numbers but hate helping customers.

But no matter what your preferences are, you should always put making money at the top of your list of things to do.

That could mean making a product, sending out emails, reaching out to clients, or making a webinar.

Find the tasks in your business that make you money and make sure to put them first every day.

Stephen Covey’s classic book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” suggests using a time-management grid to decide the order of tasks.

Each task is put in a (labelled) quadrant of the grid based on how important it is, how urgent it is, or both.
