The root cause of our crises

We really don’t talk about this issue enough.

One of the things that I believe is one of the root causes of much of the ills taking place centre stage in our society, such as depression, addiction (of all kinds), disunity, divorce and even suicide comes down to one key word. #Purpose.

More accurately, the loss of purpose. This lack of meaning many (if not most) are living with plays a huge role in that person not having a vision, having direction, having relisience to overcome one’s problems, having focus to attain a goal, to be connected to something greater than themselves and to something to live for.

The rot sets in early. At school, we get conditioned in equating our job with this higher purpose. So we get asked what we want to be when we grow up, and then strive to ‘become’ our chosen career, doctor, lawyer or engineer.

Then when we achieve it, what next? Oh, the next milestone, marriage, or house, or kids. On to the next one. It all gets boring after a while. We’re all born unique, born different. There’s only so much one-size-fits-all lifestyle we can endure. How many more promotions or more zeroes do we want on our pay checks? Eventually, we want more depth.

Not just rinse and repeat. Our life, before we know it becomes this going through the motions of short term drive, achievement then moving onto the next thing. A constant changing of the goalposts. It’s all because we haven’t figured out that we’re actually desperately seeking the one thing that will satisfy what we’re really made up of.

Our soul.

What actually satiates the soul? And what is it that unique job you were put on Earth for that literally no one else can do?

This is the question we really should be trying to find the answer to.

It’s something that has fascinated me for almost a decade now (and why I left my own corporate career, in the first place).
