Roman Democracy Began With a Woman

The story of Roman civilization where a woman caused the end of the monarchy and the beginning of democracy.

The history of the Roman woman begins with a tragedy. Before the Roman Republic, the Etruscan dynasty ruled here. His king went to the house of Brutus, a prominent citizen, one night and raped his wife, Lucretia, while he was not there.

The next day, Lucretia gathered her husband and family and told them the whole story, after which she stabbed herself to death.

Brutus picked up his wife’s body and vowed that the kingdom would not be allowed to enter Rome, so he expelled the Etruscan family and established Roman democracy. In Roman democracy, women were used to their advantage when various leaders struggled for power.

There was a political rivalry between Caesar and Pompey. To overcome this, Caesar married his daughter Julia to Pompey. But this friendship did not last because Julia died, and Caesar and Pompey fought a battle in which Pompey was defeated.

After Caesar’s assassination, his successor, Octavian, reconciled with Marc Anthony and gave him the province of Egypt, where he fell in love with Queen Cleopatra. Octavian recalled Antony to Rome and made another attempt at peace by marrying his sister Octavia who was very beautiful to his rival.

But Anthony was so in love with Cleopatra, that he left Octavia and returned to Egypt. Anthony’s infidelity restarted the Roman Civil War because Octavian (Augustus) saw it as a personal betrayal. After losing the civil war, Antony and Cleopatra committed suicide.

When Marc Anthony no longer posed a threat, Octavian took over all government powers. The Roman Senate addressed him as Augustus. He wanted Roman women to adhere to ancient traditions. And do housework with spinning and weaving cloth.

But her daughter, Julia, went against her will by following a free attitude. When his complaints reached Augustus, he deported Julia to a barren island. Once during a spectacle, one of the spectators demanded…
