Ode to a Different Me

I wish that I was someone else,
somewhere far away.
Someone, just a different me;
just not here to stay.

A figure on an empty stage;
a meteor in flight.
A star that shines without restraint;
a lantern, glowing bright.

I’m lucky; how I live right now
is perfect, fine, and free.
Just somewhere, deep inside, I feel
I’m not who I could be.

An empty piece of paper, white;
a stretching, endless sea.
A glorious, open, fertile land
of opportunity.

It’s strange to feel that something else
actually could have been.
But now, with what I know and am,
it’s gone, not now, but then.

A road that slowly goes nowhere;
a story that just ends.
A high tide quickly rushing in;
a night that just begins.

I see what I am meant to be;
a future laid out clean.
But somewhere, I see something else;
a distant, subtle gleam.
