5 Steps for Crafting a Performance Boosting Playlist

Use music to get in the perfect zone every time you run.

Most runners have a playlist or multiple playlists they use to get in the zone. Some people choose specific tunes that get them revved up. Others just throw together songs that they enjoy listening to.

Hear me out. Crafting a playlist is crucial to a great run. Each of the songs on my playlist is individually and carefully handpicked to help me achieve maximum performance.

It doesn’t matter the genre of music you enjoy, you can strategically plan a playlist to optimize your performance. Not only will it help you get in the zone, but it’ll also keep you there.

There is a delicate planning process to use when developing this playlist. Before you can even start, you have to configure the metrics of your run.

You need to map out how long you plan on running beforehand to have a general knowledge about how long — in time — your run will be. This is crucial before planning your playlist. The playlist needs to be long enough to cover your entire run and then some.

After you have this figured out, it’s time to get planning.

To a runner like me, getting in the zone is the only way I accomplish my goals. That said, getting to that zone used to be a challenge. I never realized how to use music to my advantage and get to that zone more quickly and efficiently.

Having specific warm-up songs sounds unnecessary to some but for me — and many other runners — they are the most necessary part of a run. The best part about having warm-up tunes is how they can be implemented.

I’m a morning runner. My 5 a.m. alarm is set to play my first warm-up song. My 5:05 a.m. alarm is set to play my second one.

Yes, I get out of bed every morning with my running playlist blasting. It annoys the crap out of my girlfriend. This is the level of seriousness you need to devote to your playlist.
