Use the 5 Second Rule to Bring Positive Change

Have you ever heard a parent count to three or five in hopes that a child changes what he or she is doing? I not only remember my parents counting, but have done so as a parent. We might think that kids should be able to shift gears instantly and act immediately when asked. However, the transition of counting allows kids to focus and re-frame what they are doing.

Sometimes the act of counting to five has a negative implication. We might think it should be used when someone is not doing something correctly. But, what if the transition of counting allowed people space to redirect themselves and move forward in a new direction. The goal is not on the counting itself, but what it represents. We are each one decision away from a completely different life. What if something that takes five seconds could actually change your life?

When you decide that you want to change, anything is possible. You are halfway there when you believe something can work. When you want to change, and believe in your ability as well as a recourse to facilitate your growth, the potential is endless.

Mel Robbins explains that you can’t just think about being better, but have to actually do better. Taking action is a critical step. She recommends that replacing old behavior with a new behavior is effective.

Counting backward from five reminds me of a few different things. One, it is similar to a countdown that I have given was I am waiting to jump into the water during the summertime. And, as Mel talks about the image of a rocket going into space, most people can understand that once “1” is called, the next step is launching.
